Artist Statement
Shameela Hussain
I am a visual artist based in West Yorkshire, UK. Art has been my life passion and I am a recent graduate in fine art from the University of Huddersfield in 2006.
My roots lie in Asia and my cultural background has a huge impact in my paintings. The vibrancy, the colours, the festive atmosphere and the rich heritage of India and Pakistan influence my approach to my paintings.
As well as my cultural influences within my work, the focus within my paintings is also to create works which through the power of the surface qualities evoke expressive and emotional responses in a viewer. My interest lies in my paintings to contain aesthetic qualities which evoke aesthetic perceptions. The motif of my work is the constant process of making paintings that are aesthetically satisfying through the use of colour.
I believe that colour is subjectively powerful enough to describe and represent human emotions, forming the ability to visually communicate. It is believed that one is inherent to appreciate colour aesthetically and naturally makes connections with colour to seek harmony and balance.
In order to visually communicate through the use of colour, one allows the mind to form mental images which may not have any representational content but consciously and unconsciously produce images that are aesthetically satisfying.
My work involves the experiment of abstract paintings with the use of oils, acrylics and gold leaf.
The process of making the painting holds importance for me as it is the process that conveys an emotion that I choose to portray. The motive of my work is the ongoing interest to create expressive images, simply with the use of line, colour and texture.
Colour for me is a mean of visual communication, I believe that through the use of colour I am able to express what one may choose to express through verbal communication. In one sense when I produce my paintings I am challenging myself to convey a message, emotions and experiences.
